0:02when you walk into family court
0:04I know that you've been abused by someone horrific
0:06and I know that what this person did
0:08they should be called out for
0:10that there should be consequences for what they have done
0:13if this is the first time you see me

0:17a retired psychologist
0:19and I've been an expert witness in child custody cases
0:21my ex was one of the horriblest persons in the world
0:25and I want to scream it from the top of my lungs
0:27so that everyone knew what I had suffered
0:30but when we deal with family court
0:32we get confused
0:33thinking it's our chance to vindicate ourselves
0:36to get an outside
0:37objective legal system to agree that what we suffered was wrong
0:42but that's not the point of family court
0:44family court has two basic questions
0:47what's in the best interest of the kids or this child
0:50and can the two of you get along enough in order to do that
0:53it's not about deciding who's right and wrong
0:56it's not about agreeing that your ex is the worst in the world
0:59it's not about finding the justice that you actually deserve
1:03it's simply those two questions
1:06if you walk in looking for anything else
1:08it will go wrong
1:11you will look like the crazy one
1:13you will look like somebody who has an axed grind
1:15you will prove your ex's point
1:17that you're not an easy person to get along with
1:19too often we're looking to family court for justice
1:22and it just isn't going to be found there
1:25you wanna win
1:27walk in with those two goals in mind
1:29as far as looking for revenge or vindication or validation
1:33unfortunately
1:34you have to find it elsewhere
