0:00This past weekend, I was watching a group of players at OpenPlay, and within about 10 minutes,
0:04I could already tell which players were going to stay stuck at the 3-5 level for a very long time.
0:09And the crazy thing is, it had nothing to do with athleticism, age, paddle technology, or even natural talent.
0:15It came down to habits. Specific habits that almost guarantee that you stay inconsistent, frustrated, and plateaued as a player.
0:22And the truth is, most players have no idea that they're doing these things.
0:25They think they just need more time, more games, more reps.
0:29But if your habits are wrong, more time doesn't fix the problem.
0:33It just reinforces it.
0:34So in this video, I'm going to give you seven ways to say a 3-5 forever.
0:38And obviously, the goal is not for you to actually do these things.
0:41The goal is for you to recognize the patterns that are holding back your game
0:44so that way you can finally through to the higher level play.
0:47Because if you can eliminate these habits from your game,
0:49you're going to improve a lot faster, win more games,
0:52and honestly, just enjoy pickleball a whole lot more.
0:54So stay tuned.
0:59Hi, I'm Xavier and along with my dad, we help players who are struggling at the 3-5 level
1:04become confident and respected 4.0 players so they can play smarter, get invited to high
1:09level games, and finally feel proud of their performance.
1:11The first way to stay a 3-5 forever is to try and hit winners on every single ball.
1:15This is probably the biggest difference between 3-5 players and higher level players.
1:20Most 3-5 players walk onto the court think offense first.
1:23Every ball is an opportunity to attack.
1:25Every point needs to end immediately.
1:26And because of that mindset, they force speed ups from terrible positions, try low percentage
1:30shots and constantly go for more than the situation calls for.
1:34But higher level players don't think that way.
1:36They understand that pickleball is a game of pressure, patience and percentages.
1:40Just because you can speed up the ball doesn't mean that you should.
1:43Just because you see a tiny opening doesn't mean that it's a good idea to go for that
1:46opening.
1:47Better players are constantly asking themselves, what is the highest percentage shot available
1:51right now?
1:52And most of the time, that answer is not a flashy winner.
1:54It's a reset.
1:55It's a controlled drop.
1:57It's extending the rally until the right opportunity shows up.
1:59One of the fastest ways to improve your consistency is to stop trying to win every point immediately
2:04on this shot right here.
2:05Let the point develop.
2:07Trust that disciplined pickleball will create opportunities for you naturally.
2:10The second way to stay at 3 forever is by avoiding the soft game This is huge A lot of players think that the path to improvement is by learning how to hit the ball harder bigger serves faster hands more aggressive speed ups But the reality is that the soft game is what separates advanced players from average players If you can hit a reliable drop
2:27shot, you're going to struggle getting to the kitchen line. If you can't dink consistently,
2:31you're going to struggle creating pressure without making errors. And if you can't reset the ball
2:35when you're in trouble, stronger players are going to overwhelm you. The soft game slows down the
2:40point and gives you control. And control in pickleball is everything. Most players avoid
2:45working on these shots because they're not exciting. Nobody posts a highlight reel of a
2:49great reset, but the players who embrace the soft game are the ones who actually level up in this
2:53game. If you want to stay a 3-5 forever, keep on avoiding drops and dinks and resets. But if you
2:58want to improve, these shots are the shots that you need and they need to become a foundation of
3:03your game. The third way to stay a 3-5 forever is by standing in bad positions on the court.
3:07So many players make the game harder than it needs to be simply because they're out of position all of the time
3:12They're too far back when they should be moving in. They're trying to attack from the transition zone. They're leaving giant gaps in the middle
3:18They're drifting while hitting instead of getting balanced before contact and because of this
3:22They're constantly out of position and every shot feels rushed and difficult
3:26Higher level players understand that positioning creates consistency. They know where they're supposed to be and because of that the game feels slower and more controlled
3:34Look at Ben Johns for an example. He's the number one player in the world for a reason.
3:38When he moves on the court, it looks like he's floating from one place to the next, never in a rush and yet always on time.
3:44And it's because he knows the proper place to stand in any given situation within a pickleball point,
3:49and he moves there in anticipation before the ball is even hit to him.
3:53One of the biggest mindset shifts that you can make is realizing that good pickleball is not just about shot execution.
3:58It's also about putting yourself in the right spot so that the shot becomes easier.
4:03The kitchen line exists for a reason.
4:04That's the strongest position on the court,
4:06and if you're not learning how to work your way there patiently and effectively,
4:10you're making the game way harder than it needs to be.
4:12The fourth way to stay a 3-5 forever is by blaming your partner for everything.
4:16Now, this one might sting a little bit, but it's true.
4:19Some players lose a game, and they immediately start thinking about all the things that their partner did wrong.
4:23They missed too many shots.
4:24They didn't cover the middle.
4:25They popped the ball up.
4:27But higher-level players think differently.
4:28They take ownership of their own improvement.
4:31They ask themselves what could I have done better because even if your partner did make some mistakes focusing on that doesn help you improve at all The only thing that you can control is your own game And honestly the players who constantly blame their partners usually stay stuck
4:44the longest because they never address the real issues in their own game. The fastest improving
4:48players are coachable. They're self-aware, they take responsibility, and because of that,
4:52they improve faster over time. The fifth way to stay a 3-5 forever is by playing random pickleball.
4:57What I mean by that is you're walking onto the court with no actual strategy or structure behind your decisions.
5:03Most recreational players are just reacting. They're not building points intentionally. They're not thinking ahead.
5:08They're just hitting whatever shot feels available in the moment that they're hitting it.
5:12But high-level pickleball is structured. Better players understand sequences. They know that the drop gets them to the kitchen,
5:17the dink creates pressure, the volley finishes the point. They know that certain dinks will likely produce certain replies.
5:23They understand patterns and because they understand patterns,
5:25they're able to play proactively instead of playing reactively.
5:28This is one of the biggest differences between 3-5 and 4-0 players.
5:31At 3-5, points often feel chaotic, and at 4-0 plus, the players are constructing points with purpose.
5:36So if you want to stay stuck, keep playing random pickleball.
5:39But if you want to improve, start thinking about how your shots connect together
5:42instead of treating every shot like its own isolated event.
5:45The sixth way to stay at 3-5 forever is by refusing to be patient.
5:48Patience is probably one of the most underrated skills in pickleball.
5:51Everyone wants to speed up the ball, everyone wants to be aggressive,
5:54everyone wants to hit that winner. But most points at the amateur level are lost, not won.
5:59That means that if you can simply keep the ball in play longer than your opponents,
6:02you'll win more games almost immediately. I've tested this over and over again against lower
6:06level players. I'll go into a game with one simple goal. Make one more ball. No crazy attacks,
6:12no low percentage speedups, just disciplined, controlled pickleball. And eventually, they crack.
6:17They get impatient, they force offense, and they try to do too much. And then they miss.
6:21Patience is not passive, it's strategic.
6:24You're allowing pressure and consistency
6:26to do the work for you.
6:27And honestly, most players would improve dramatically
6:30if they simply slowed their game down
6:32and waited for better opportunities
6:33instead of forcing the bad opportunities.
6:36The seventh way to stay a 3-5 forever
6:38is trying to improve through games alone.
6:40This is probably the biggest trap in recreational pickleball.
6:43People think playing more automatically means improving more.
6:46But if you're just repeating the same bad habits
6:48over and over again games alone won fix the issue You need intentional practice You need focused repetition You need feedback Higher level players don just play mindlessly for hours They identify weaknesses and work on them systematically
7:00They drill drops.
7:01They work on dinks.
7:01They practice resets and volleys.
7:03They train specific situations repeatedly until the shots become automatic.
7:07And then when they go and play in the games, those skills actually show up under pressure.
7:10If your entire improvement plan is just to play more games, there's a good chance that
7:14you're going to plateau.
7:15Improvement happens when practice becomes intentional.
7:18So when you put all this together,
7:19you start to realize something really important.
7:22Most players don't stay stuck because they lack talent.
7:24They stay stuck because their habits are keeping them stuck.
7:27They're trying to hit winners too early,
7:28avoiding the soft game, standing in bad positions,
7:31blaming their partners, playing random pickleball,
7:33refusing to be patient, and relying on games alone to improve.
7:36But the good news is habits can change.
7:38And when they do, improvement happens really fast.
7:41Because the truth of getting to 4-0
7:42is not about becoming some flashy highlight reel player,
7:45it's about becoming disciplined, consistent,
7:47structured and reliable.
7:49It's about understanding how to win points
7:51with high percentages instead of low percentages.
7:53And honestly, once players understand that,
7:55the game actually becomes way more fun.
7:57And you stop feeling chaotic on the court.
7:59You stop feeling rushed.
8:00You stop feeling like every point is out of your control.
8:02Instead, you start playing with confidence
8:04because you finally have the framework
8:06for how to approach the game.
8:07And if you're being honest with yourself,
8:08that's probably what you want.
8:09You don't want to feel like the weak link anymore.
8:11You don't want to feel nervous
8:12every time the ball comes to you.
8:13You want to feel calm.
8:15You want to feel confident.
8:16You want to feel in control.
8:17You wanna be someone that people trust to partner with.
8:20Someone who wins games because they're solid and dependable.
8:23And the path to becoming that player is not more complexity,
8:26it's simplifying the game
8:27and mastering the fundamentals that actually matter.
