0:00Have you ever tried to convince someone of something
0:01and they instantly push back?
0:03Psychology says there's a simple reason why that happens.
0:06So here's the paradox.
0:08The more you try to force the outcome,
0:10the more resistance it creates.
0:11You try to convince someone,
0:13they shut down.
0:14You push harder,
0:15they pull away.
0:17It feels like effort should work,
0:19but a lot of times,
0:20force creates friction.
0:21Psychology has a name for this.
0:23Reactance.
0:25The moment that people feel pushed,
0:26they stop listening and they start defending.
0:30This is not always because they disagree.
0:32It's simply because they want to feel like the choice is theirs.
0:37Now, stick with me here,
0:38because this means something subtle is happening:
0:41The pressure itself is the problem.
0:44You've seen this before.
0:45A parent pushes their child to make the right decision.
0:48The child resists, not because they don't want to make the right decision,
0:52but because they don't want to feel forced.
0:54You might remind your partner to eat better or work out.
0:58And they shut down,
0:59even though deep down they know that you're right.
1:02People react this way because of the pressure.
1:05They don't want to feel forced.
1:06But get this.
1:07This doesn't just happen with other people.
1:10It happens inside of you.
1:12When you try not to think about someone,
1:15you find it even more difficult to not think about them.
1:18The more you try to force confidence,
1:20the less confident you feel.
1:21The mind doesn't respond well to force.
1:24In fact, psychology has found that the more you try to
1:26tightly control or suppress your internal state,
1:30it sticks around even longer.
1:32So this leads to a very different way of thinking.
1:35What if the breakthrough doesn't come from pushing harder,
1:39but what if it actually comes from creating space?
1:42More than 2,000 years ago,
1:43Lao Tzu wrote, “Nothing in the world is as soft and yielding as water,”
1:47“Yet for dissolving the hard and inflexible,”
1:50“nothing can surpass it.”
1:51Water doesn't force its way forward,
1:53but over time, it reshapes everything.
1:56And one of the strangest truths about life is this:
1:59What feels like strength, force,
2:01and control is often what creates resistance.
2:05And what feels like letting go…
2:07Is often what helps things to move.
