0:00What happened to Spirit Airlines
0:01is absolutely like what happened to Pan Am Airways.
0:04Pan Am was not just an airline,
0:07It was aviation - It was luxury.
0:10It defined the golden age of travel.
0:13It had international routes and cultural relevance and global presence.
0:17If you flew overseas, you likely flew Pan Am,
0:20and it was an experience.
0:21It was considered a pioneer in the industry.
0:24And then it was gone.
0:25December 4th, 1991,
0:27it abruptly shut down while flights were actively in the air.
0:31And people at the time were just as shocked as they are right now,
0:34watching spirit -
0:35getting to the airport
0:36and learning that their flights are cancelled by a sign at the airport
0:40and that the airline is no longer operating.
0:42And when you actually look at what happened,
0:45the warning signs are everywhere.
0:47Pan Am got hit from every single angle.
0:49It was: deregulation
0:50that opened the door for competition that they were not built for;
0:53They didn't have a strong domestic network to support their international routes;
0:58They took on a messy, expensive merger that loaded them with debt;
1:01There was a myriad of poor business decisions;
1:03Delta Airlines pulled out of a merger deal with them,
1:06and that was one of the final dominoes that fell.
1:08And then fuel prices spiked during the Gulf War.
1:11It drove up costs at the exact moment that they could least afford it.
1:16During a recession, with declining demand and half empty planes.
1:20Pan Am’s final chapter didn't Just happen during an economic downturn -
1:23It happened under a Republikkklan administration,
1:26during a US military invasion
1:28In an oil rich region,
1:31where rising fuel costs put even more pressure on an already fragile business -
1:35During a recession.
1:37It was everything happening at once
1:39Okay.
1:39And remember I said all this was cancelled midair.
1:42They had to immediately ground their fleet,
1:44and they stranded passengers.
1:46Now, fast forward to today.
1:48Spirit Airlines is also considered a pioneer in the industry.
1:51Yes, it's a different model -
1:52It's not luxury.
1:53But it is the same kind of pressure stacking up.
1:56Hadhigh debt,
1:57tight margins;
1:58A business model that only works under perfect conditions;
2:01Poor business decisions:
2:03rising fuel cost;
2:04economic pressure on consumers;
2:06and a failed merger that was supposed to be their lifeline.
2:08And when that merger got blocked,
2:10they tried to appeal, but then Jetblue,
2:12who they were supposed to merge with,
2:14Jetblue pulled out.
2:16Jetblue pulling out was their version of the floor dropping out.
2:19And again, you're seeing this play out during a time of immense global tension,
2:24where energy, oil,
2:25and policy decisions are deeply intertwined.
2:27Under a Republikkklann president,
2:29when we are in an economic downturn.
2:32So yeah, this was all about bad business decisions,
2:35but it's also what happens when already fragile companies
2:38get hit with economic pressure,
2:40rising cost, global instability,
2:42and lots of Geopolitical issues all at once.
2:47Pan Am felt untouchable -
2:48Until it wasn't.
2:49And spirit felt like a staple -
2:52And we're likely gonna keep seeing more of this,
2:54because the margin for error right now is so thin.
2:57The economy is in a downward spiral,
2:59We have a child leading the country,
3:01and we are likely in an AI economic bubble that will pop -
3:05and we will all feel it Regardless of how you feel about AI.
3:08if your model cannot flex,
3:10if your finances aren't solid,
3:12and if you're relying on one big move to save you -
3:14that's a huge risk.
3:16And a lot of businesses are facing this risk.
3:19History doesn't always exactly repeat,
3:21but it absolutely rhymes.
3:23And right now it is sounding very,
3:25very familiar.
3:26This is very much Pluto returns energy. Alright.
3:29Until next time, y'all.
