0:00Music facts that sound fake but are real.
0:02Imagine being a teenager
0:04and accidentally naming one of the most famous rock songs of all time.
0:07In 1991, Kathleen Hannah was hanging out with her friend Kurt Cobain.
0:11The two were messing around and spray painting his bedroom wall
0:14when she wrote the phrase
0:15Kurt smells like teen spirit.
0:17At the time, Kurt thought it was something deep,
0:19like a poetic, rebellious statement about youth
0:21culture and the spirit of a generation.
0:24He loved it so much
0:25that he turned it into the title of Smells Like Teen Spirit,
0:27which became the breakout hit for Nirvana
0:29and one of the most iconic songs ever.
0:31But there was a hilarious twist.
0:33Kurt didn't realize that Teen Spirit
0:35was actually the name of a cheap deodorant brand
0:37popular with teenage girls.
0:39Kathleen wasn't praising him.
0:40She was joking that he smelled like his girlfriend's deodorant.
0:43And here's the craziest part,
0:44Kurt didn't even find out the real meaning
0:46until after the song was recorded
0:48and already blowing up worldwide.
0:50He accidentally named the anthem of an entire generation
0:53after deodorant,
0:54all because he didn't get a joke that was written on his own wall.
